It is just as important to make a great first impression in an online interview as it is with an interview held face-to-face.

So, if you have an online interview coming up and are looking for advice on how you prepare for it, here are some tips that can help you:

1.       Wear professional clothing

Though your interview will be online, dressing professionally from head to toe is important. This gives a great first impression and shows the interviewer that you have put in the effort and care about the role that you have applied for.

Bear in mind that it is good practice to wear professional attire regardless of the company’s usual dress code.

2.       Make sure you test your devices

It is not unusual for technical difficulties to occur from time to time given how unpredictable technology can be. It is for this reason that it is important you check your devices leading up to your interview.

Make a final check on the day of your interview, preferably a couple hours prior have enough time to resolve any unforeseen problems

3.       Find a suitable environment to attend your interview

Leading up to your interview, make sure you find a good place to conduct your interview. This would be somewhere that it quiet, has a strong Wi-Fi connection, good lighting and a neutral background. This will help to prevent any disruption to the interview process and will allow you and the interviewer to see and hear each other clearly without being distracted by your surroundings.

4.       Practice answering questions

During your online interview, naturally the interviewer will ask you questions pertaining to your work experience, qualifications and aspirations. Searching commons questions asked in an interview and practising how you will answer them will help you to be better prepared.

It is also good to go over your CV and remind yourself of what you have detailed on your document just so you do not struggle to answer any questions related to your working or education..

5.       Body Language

Pay attention to your body language during your interview, this will help you conduct yourself in a way that will make you come across as professional and engaged. Sitting up straight, looking directly into camera, and verbally or physically acknowledging what the interviewer is saying will show that you are paying attention throughout.

6.       Keep any prompts on your screen

Keep your CV and any prompts that you want to refer to on screen during your interview. This allows for you to glance at them quickly without looking distracted.

Likewise, if you want to take notes, it is better to let your interviewer know at the start of your interview. Otherwise, it may come across like you are not paying attention as the interviewer may not be able to see what you are doing.

These six tips will help you understand what you need to consider when preparing for your interview and give you a good chance at having a successful interview.
